Love for the jewelry carries sentimental value, especially when these beautiful pieces represent significant moments in life, but isn’t it heartbreaking when you find that your family heirlooms, precious gemstones or gold jeweler that you wanted to pass on to your generations have begun to lose their sparkle.

Even if you are not planning to pass them on, you want to preserve them so they look as pretty as they were on your wedding day. Basic jewelry care should become a habit to maintain and preserve all our treasured jewels. Not all gemstones are same and some of them need extra care from us so they can maintain their appearance.

Here are some tips and tricks that you can use to give more life to your jewelry:

Storing:

To protect your jewelry, pieces should be individually placed in a pouch or within a soft lined box to stop them being scratched or tangled. Ideally store your jewelry in a dark, cool and dry place, and try to keep pieces apart, so that they don’t rub together or tangle up.

Cleaning:

Metal -

Using a soft, lint-free cloth is an effective way to keep silver, 18ct yellow and rose gold vermeil jewelry looking shiny and lustrous. A silver cleaner can also be used to clean sterling silver pieces. Ideally, store silver pieces in an airtight bag to help reduce tarnishing. Do not use tissue paper or paper towels to clean metal as they can cause scratching.

Gemstones -

Since many gemstones are quite delicate, hot water, harsh chemicals, and cleaners should be avoided at all times. We advise cleaning your precious stones with a clean, soft, damp cloth after wearing. Very porous stones such as turquoise and emeralds should be cleaned using an untreated, dry, soft cloth only. Do not use tissue paper or paper towels to clean gemstones as they can cause scratching.

Pearl Jewelry -

Always wipe your pearls gently with a damp cloth, dry them off and store them in an airtight container. Keep your pearls in a pouch or a box that has a soft lining. Keep your pearls away from perfumes, makeup, and hairsprays as they can cause discoloration.

Silver Jewelry -

To clean your silver jewelry, use a phosphate-free detergent or just soap water. Rinse it off, and wipe it with a soft and clean cloth.

Note: Always use warm water to rinse off silver.

Gold Jewelry -

You can clean your gold jewelry twice a week with a mild detergent, lukewarm water, and a soft cloth.

Diamond Jewelry -

You can clean your diamonds with a good quality jewelry cleaning solution that is easily available with leading jewelers. You can also simply mix some ammonia and water to clean your diamonds.
